- 2 sumo suits
- 2 helmet/wigs
- 2 pairs of mitts
- 2 belts
- Instructions
Set up area
- Choose a large, open area with plenty of room around the ring.
- Keep the area clear of furniture and sharp objects.
- We strongly recommend two additional spotters around the ring to help keep wrestlers in bounds.
- Optional (recommended): place extra crash mats around the outside for added protection.
Set up the ring
- Unroll the 3 mats and lay them flat in the correct order.
- Align the mats and secure them using the attached hook & loop strips.
- Press/pat the seams together firmly.
Putting on the suit (helper required)
Participants cannot safely get into the suits without assistance. Use a helper/spotter.
- Lay the suit belly-down on the mat.
- Participant removes shoes, lies face-down on the mat, and wriggles feet-first into the suit.
- Helper holds the back open, guides arms through the sleeves, and pulls the suit up over the shoulders.
- With the participant still on their belly, helper fastens the two rear buckles and closes the hook & loop strip.
- Help the participant to a standing position.
- Put on the helmet:
- Pull the sides outward to avoid snagging ears or earrings.
- Adjust the internal foam pad (hook & loop) for a proper fit.
- Fasten the helmet strap securely.
- Put the mitts on last.
To remove the suit: reverse the steps above.
Required safety gear & handling
- Helmets must be worn by all contestants — no exceptions.
- Mitts must be worn at all times to prevent grabbing and to protect the suit material.
- Do not grab or pull an opponent by the latex/vinyl skin. Use the belt only.
The contest (how to play)
- A match is called a Basho.
- Before starting, both wrestlers stand behind the white lines and face each other.
- Goal: push your opponent out of the ring or wrestle them to the mat.
- Allowed: pushing, tripping, or lifting by the belt.
- Not allowed: pulling or grabbing the suit’s outer skin.
